Yesterday was the 25th Golden Slipper Day I have had the pleasure of photographing. The are hard, tough but brilliant days. I’ve photographed many champions bu yesterday was the finest Slipper Day I’ve been to. First there was Winx. Her trainer @chris_waller_racing sat next to me in the press room. As I said goodbye to him he said “thanks for loving her. It means a great deal. It really does” and tears prickled my eyes as I walked out. And then beautiful Estijaab, who I’ve photographed extensively throughout her yearling marketing and her racing campaigns, led all the way to win the Slipper. She is Snitzel’s first Golden Slipper winner. I’ve photographed Snitzel for @arrowfieldstud for 10 years now. The first time I photographed him I walked away from his paddock thinking “this horse has something very special”. So much so that when I visited good friends of mine i remember talking enthusiastically about this young stallion who had taken my eye. I remember saying to Neil “if I had a Broodmare and $38,500 that’s who I would send her too because he is going to be a star”. Of course I had neither said mare or $38,500 but that is beside the point. The person I was talking to was Neil Vallance who 4 and a half years later saved my life (touch wood...) after a nasty cancer diagnosis. In a wonderful touch of irony it is this conversation I think of when I pause to be thankful that I was able to be on course yesterday to capture these moments through my lenses.

Hier était le 25ème Golden Slipper Day que j'ai eu le plaisir de photographier. Ce sont des journées difficiles, difficiles mais brillantes. J'ai photographié de nombreux champions hier, c'était le meilleur Slipper Day que j'ai connu.

D'abord il y avait Winx. Son entraîneur @chris_waller_racing s'est assis à côté de moi dans la salle de presse. Comme je lui dis au revoir il a dit
" merci de l'aimer. Cela signifie beaucoup. C'est vraiment le cas " et les larmes me piquaient les yeux alors que je sortais.

Et puis la belle Estijaab, que j'ai longuement photographiée tout au long de son marketing d'yearling et ses campagnes de course, a mené tout le chemin pour gagner le Slipper.

Elle est la première gagnante de Snitzel Golden Slipper. J'ai photographié Snitzel pour @arrowfieldstud pendant 10 ans maintenant. La première fois que je l'ai photographié, je me suis éloigné de son paddock en pensant "ce cheval a quelque chose de très spécial".

Tant et si bien que lorsque j'ai rendu visite à de bons amis, je me souviens avoir parlé avec enthousiasme de ce jeune étalon qui m'avait attiré l'attention. Je me souviens d'avoir dit à Neil «si j'avais une poulinière et 38 500 $, c'est aussi ce que je lui enverrais, car il va devenir une star».

Bien sûr, je n'avais ni poulinière ni 38 500 $, mais ce n'est pas la question. La personne à qui je parlais était Neil Vallance qui, 4 ans et demi plus tard, m'a sauvé la vie (toucher du bois ...) après un mauvais diagnostic de cancer.

Dans une merveilleuse ironie, c'est cette conversation à laquelle je pense quand je fais une pause pour être reconnaissant que j'ai pu être sur la bonne voie hier pour capturer ces moments à travers mes lentilles.
